A stunning example of contemporary home design and another addition to the many remarkable ravine homes in Toronto, Hariri Pontarini Architects changed the perception of modern homes in the city by implementing a striking stone facade, a rarity in material choice for modern Toronto homes, and worthy of the 2010 Tucker Design Award of Excellence for stone craftsmanship. The L-shaped home is a palatial 11,600 sq ft stocked with storey stacking windows at the rear that welcome the surrounding ravine while the interior is polished with natural materials, showcasing the utmost craftsmanship.
This residence employs two volumes with carefully choreographed openings that address the public street while maintaining the importance of domestic intimacy and privacy. The back of the house takes advantage of its ravine setting with a design of transparency that maximizes the natural light and provides natural landscape vistas. Employing a vocabulary of enduring materials of French limestone, roughcast stucco, and teak windows, the house underscores the client’s desire to create a generational home.
